Tree Houses

Michael and Judith Peyton created a "Building Tree Houses" class for students aged seven to fourteen. First, each of the seventeen students drew a design for their dream tree house. Next, all student tree house designs were displayed. Students looked at the designs and marked their favorite tree house features. Most of the students' favorite features were incorporated as they talked among themselves during the building of the two tree houses.

The tree houses were connected by a bridge in two sections: a stationary bridge was fastened to a swinging rope bridge between the two structures. During this four day class, students selected the parts they wanted to work on, learning new skills as the tree houses took shape. On the final day, each student explained his or her building role to an audience of parents and community members.
